Two summers from now, the mental picture most of us carry of Dana Point Harbor, seven low tile-roofed buildings from 1971, sea lions barking under the pilings, gulls on the pizza-window railings, will be a memory. This fall is the last chance to walk it the way you have always walked it.

The One-Line Thesis

The Wharf you know closes on a specific date, the food story quietly moved uphill to the Lantern District this year, and if you live here, the calendar between now and New Year's is unusually worth planning around.

The Dates That Actually Matter

Everything else on this page hangs off four dates. Write them down.

• September 15, 2026. Wind & Sea Restaurant serves its final customers on the Wharf before abatement and demolition of Building 1.
• October 31, 2026. Buildings 2 through 5 stop operating. Gemmell's, Jon's Fish Market, Proud Mary's, Turks, and the rest close their harbor doors.
• November 1, 2026. The Wharf closes to the public. Dana Point Harbor Partners has confirmed this to The Log.
• End of 2026. The Dana Point Marina Inn stops taking reservations after the Boat Parade of Lights, held December 11 through 13.

If you have a "we always do this at the Wharf" tradition, you have between now and Halloween to do it one more time.

What Is Still Worth Walking Down To

Phase 3 fencing has narrowed the Wharf, but it has not emptied it. A handful of tenants are open through October 31, and one of them, Frisby Cellars, is arguably better than it was a year ago. Josh Frisby stayed on the Wharf but moved into the former Waterman's Restaurant space, which gave the winery a proper outdoor patio, beers on tap, an expanded food program, and room for private tastings and vintage releases. If you have not stopped in since the move, it reads like a different business.

Beach Harbor Pizza's owner Mario Bahena is scouting a new Dana Point storefront after eleven years on the Wharf. Bella Bazaar is still selling from its local warehouse and online. If you were a regular at either, the businesses have not disappeared, they have decoupled from the harbor address.

Why The Interesting Food Story Is Above The Harbor This Year

Here is the pattern a resident notices before a portal does. Every meaningful restaurant opening in Dana Point in 2026 happened up on Pacific Coast Highway and Del Prado, not on the water. The Lantern District absorbed the energy the Wharf could not host during demolition.

The clearest example is The White Rooster, which opened January 16, 2026 in the former Doheny Cafe space on PCH. The chef is Michael Campbell, formerly chef de cuisine at The Loft at Montage, then Pacific Pearl Café in San Juan Capistrano, then Capas at River Street Marketplace. Two things about Campbell matter locally. He co-founded Portland's Sustainable Seafood Summit, which means the sourcing questions get taken seriously, and he is publicly a Doheny surfer, so the room is oriented to people who already live here rather than resort guests down the hill.

A block over, Mack's Tavern took the old Costellos building and is running a soft opening this summer with live music on the schedule.

Combine those with the Lantern District's existing bench, Jack's, Bon Appétit, Coastal Kitchen, Craft House, Glasspar Seafood & Steakhouse, Dana Point Ale House, and Wine Experience, and the Del Prado corridor is quietly having the year the Wharf can't.

Where The Wharf Traffic Rerouted On A Friday Night

If you were the household that drove down for a seafood dinner and a walk on the boardwalk, your fallback is already open. Hook & Anchor on La Plaza remains the reservation to make for oyster-hour habits, with happy hour drinks from 3 to 5 and food from 4 to 5 daily. Nothing has changed there. What has changed is the volume of Friday-night seafood traffic that used to split across the Wharf and now doesn't.

The Wharf is doing double duty this summer. Dana Point Harbor Partners leaned into that with a limited-run pop-up called Smoke on the Water, a partnership with Delanya's Smokin' Hot Texas BBQ serving from 11 a.m. on the boardwalk.

Treat the pop-up as a feature of this specific summer. It will not exist a year from now.

Parking, The Fuel Dock, And The Things That Quietly Got Better

The three-tiered parking structure at Golden Lantern and Dana Point Harbor Drive wrapped in July 2025 and offers four hours free. It is closer to the Wharf than the old surface lots, and yet most residents I talk to still park where they used to and then complain about the walk. Try the structure once. You will not go back.

The Dana Point Fuel Dock reopened at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 20, 2026, marking the completion of the fuel tank replacement project. If you have a boat in the East Basin, Docks G through J opened for occupancy in late spring 2026 as part of Phase 11 of the marina rebuild, which is now past two-thirds complete and running ahead of schedule.

The Calendar Between Now And New Year's

A short list of things worth putting on the family calendar this fall:

• OC Parks Summer Concert Series. Thursday evenings through September 3, gates at 5, music at 6. Shows rotate through Mason, Irvine, Craig, Mile Square, and Bluff Park at Salt Creek Beach. The Dana Point stops this year are the closers.
• A final walk of the current boardwalk. Any weekend before October 31. Take the stairs down from Blue Lantern Gazebo and the Bluff Top Trail so you get The Arches on the way, then the Wharf pilings on the way back.
• Boat Parade of Lights. December 11 through 13. The Dana Point Marina Inn is already taking reservations. This is the last edition before the inn is demolished in early 2027 as part of the hotel-site preparation.

What To Notice Before Phase 3 Wraps

The Commercial Core, called Mariner's Village, is targeted for late 2026 completion, with the broader $600 million harbor project delivering in overlapping phases into 2027 and 2028. When it lands, the waterfront boardwalk will more than double in length, eventually running as a continuous walkable path from Doheny State Beach to Baby Beach. That expanded promenade is scheduled to be in place for the 2028 Summer Olympics sailing events, which Dana Point is slated to host.

The interesting part for a resident, and the reason to walk the harbor this fall rather than wait for ribbon cuttings, is that the boardwalk you know, the one that ends where the fences start, is the "before." You will show your grandchildren photos of it. Take a few good ones on the way out.

A Note For Homeowners

None of the above is a market forecast. It is a calendar. But it is worth saying plainly that coastal amenity projects of this scale reshape how a town is talked about, and the story a buyer hears about Dana Point in 2028 will not be the story a buyer heard in 2018. That is not a reason to do anything today. It is a reason to pay attention to the neighborhood you already own in, because the version of it you are living through right now is the version that changes.
